How to Use All 13 Etsy Tags Effectively

Most sellers waste half their tags on duplicates or generic words. Learn how to choose 13 distinct, high-value phrases that send strong signals to Etsy's search engine.

Tags Are Free Ranking Signals — Use Them All

Etsy gives you 13 tag slots per listing. Every empty slot is a missed opportunity. Every duplicate tag is a wasted one. Yet sellers routinely leave tags blank or repeat the same phrase in slightly different order. Here's a better approach.

How Tags Work

Tags help Etsy match your listing to search queries. The platform combines your tags with your title and listing category to decide when and where to show your product. Tags that also appear in your title get a slight boost, but the real value of tags is covering ground your title can't.

Think of your title as your main runway and your tags as 13 side roads leading buyers to your listing. Each tag should be a phrase that a real buyer might search for — ideally one that isn't already prominent in your title.

The 13-Tag Strategy

Divide your tags into groups:

Core product phrases (3–4 tags) These describe what you're selling in the most direct way: "neon sign," "custom LED light," "acrylic wall sign." Use exact phrases, not single words.

Audience or occasion tags (3–4 tags) Think about who buys this and why: "housewarming gift," "birthday gift for sister," "wedding reception decor," "new baby gift." These match high-intent searches.

Style and material tags (2–3 tags) Buyers often filter by style or material: "modern home decor," "minimalist bedroom sign," "personalized acrylic." These catch style-conscious shoppers.

Long-tail and niche tags (2–3 tags) These are lower-traffic but often convert well because they're specific: "custom name sign for nursery," "LED name light for teenager's room." Less competition means your listing can rank near the top for these.

What to Avoid

  • Single-word tags. "Gift" or "sign" alone is too broad to be useful. Etsy suggests using 2–3 word phrases.
  • Repeating your title exactly. The overlap does help slightly, but you get more coverage by tagging phrases that aren't already in your title.
  • Tagging things that don't describe your product. Irrelevant tags confuse the algorithm and won't lead to real sales.
  • Using the same phrase twice with minor variations. "Bedroom wall sign" and "wall sign bedroom" aren't meaningfully different — use that second slot on something new.

How to Find the Right Tags

Start by thinking from the buyer's perspective. If you wanted to buy this item without knowing what it was called, what would you type? Ask a friend to describe your product in their own words — they'll often use language that never occurred to you.

NeonSign's keyword tool can confirm which phrases have real search volume before you commit them to your listing. It also shows you which phrases competitors are targeting, so you can decide whether to compete head-on or target underserved niches.

Refresh Tags Periodically

Buyer search behavior shifts with seasons, trends, and current events. A tag that worked well in January ("Valentine's Day gift") is useless in July. Review your tags when you update your title, before major holidays, and whenever you notice a drop in listing views.
