Finding the Keywords Buyers Actually Type Into Etsy

Generic keyword lists won't cut it. Here's how to find the specific phrases real shoppers use when they're ready to buy your type of product.

Why Most Keyword Lists Fail

You can find "popular Etsy keywords" on a hundred blog posts. The problem is that every seller who reads those posts rushes to use the same phrases, flooding the search results and making competition nearly impossible. Effective keyword research means finding terms that buyers actually use for your specific product — not terms that are broadly popular.

Start With the Search Bar

Etsy's own search bar is one of the most useful free tools you have. Start typing a phrase related to your product and watch the autocomplete suggestions. These are real searches that buyers have typed frequently enough for Etsy to suggest them. Each suggestion is a keyword worth considering.

Try variations: add a color, material, occasion, or recipient to the base phrase and see what comes up. "Custom neon sign for" followed by different words will surface a dozen potential keywords you might not have considered.

Think Like a Buyer, Not a Seller

Sellers often describe their products in technical or craft-specific language. Buyers search in the language of their life and problems. A seller might call something a "resin-cast acrylic diffusion panel LED sign," but a buyer searches for "glowing name sign for bedroom."

Ask yourself: what problem does this product solve? What occasion is it bought for? What feeling does it give? The answers lead you to buyer-language keywords.

Use Volume and Competition Together

Search volume tells you how often a phrase is searched. Competition tells you how many listings are targeting it. A phrase with high volume and high competition might rank you on page 15 where nobody scrolls. A phrase with moderate volume and low competition could put you on page one.

NeonSign's keyword research module shows both metrics side by side so you can make that call quickly. Aim for a mix: a few high-volume phrases for visibility, and several lower-competition phrases where you can realistically rank.

Mine Your Own Existing Traffic

If you have any listings that are already generating views, look at your Etsy Shop Stats to see what search terms are bringing people in. Those are real buyer phrases — and they're telling you exactly how your audience thinks. Double down on the ones that convert.

Seasonal and Trending Phrases

Search behavior changes throughout the year. Phrases around "Mother's Day gift" spike in April and May. "Christmas bedroom decor" starts climbing in October. Build a calendar of relevant seasonal terms and update your listings a few weeks before each peak.

Trending searches are harder to predict, but you can watch Etsy's own trend reports and pay attention to what's being featured in curated gift guides. If a broader trend (say, a certain aesthetic or pop culture moment) aligns with your product, it may be worth creating a listing specifically targeting that angle.

Keep a Running Keyword List

Don't do keyword research once and forget it. Keep a simple document or spreadsheet where you log phrases along with their approximate volume, competition level, and which listings you've used them in. Revisit it every few months to see what's changed and what new terms have emerged.
