Your First 10 Sales: A Starter Checklist for New Etsy Shops

The first ten sales are the hardest. They build your review score, your algorithm standing, and your confidence. Here's what to prioritize to get there faster.

Why the First 10 Matter So Much

Before you have any reviews, Etsy's algorithm doesn't know much about you. You could have the most beautiful product in your category, but without sales history, you're starting at a significant disadvantage in search rankings compared to established shops.

Reviews serve two functions: they tell potential buyers that your shop is trustworthy, and they send positive signals to the algorithm that your listings convert. Every one of your first ten sales is building both of those things simultaneously.

Checklist: Before You Open

Listings:

  • At least five to ten listings live (shops with more listings have more entry points for discovery)
  • Every listing uses all 140 title characters
  • Every listing uses all 13 tags
  • Descriptions answer at least the five most common buyer questions
  • Each listing has a minimum of five photos, with a clear hero image

Shop setup:

  • Profile photo and banner are complete (incomplete shops look untrustworthy)
  • Shop bio tells the story of who you are and what you make
  • About section includes your process and your "why"
  • Shop policies are filled in: returns, exchanges, shipping timelines
  • All sections in your shop are organized and named

Shipping:

  • Shipping profiles are set up with accurate processing times
  • You've done a test shipment to confirm your packaging protects the product

Checklist: After You Open

Pricing check: Review your prices against similar products. Not to undercut — but to make sure you're not so far above market that first-time visitors bounce before they've had a chance to see your reviews.

SEO pass: Run each listing through your keyword research tool. Confirm that every title opens with the highest-traffic phrase for that product. Check that your tags are diverse and not duplicating each other.

Photography review: Look at your hero images as they appear in search results (not on the listing page). At thumbnail size, is the product immediately identifiable? Does it look as good as the competition?

Star seller groundwork: Etsy's Star Seller program requires quick message responses and on-time shipping. Set up auto-replies for messages so buyers hear from you quickly even if you're away. Package carefully so orders arrive in good condition.

How to Get Your First Sales

Tell people. Share your new shop with friends, family, and any communities you're a part of. You're not asking them to buy something they don't want — you're asking them to spread the word if it's relevant to anyone they know.

Offer a small discount code for the first few weeks. Put it in your shop announcement and in your social media bio. First-time buyers are more likely to take a chance on a new shop with zero reviews if there's a small incentive.

Respond to messages extremely quickly during your first few months. Even if a message doesn't turn into a sale, fast responses contribute to your Star Seller metrics and signal to the algorithm that you're an engaged seller.

Maintaining Momentum

After your first ten sales, keep your listings fresh. Update photos, refine titles based on what search terms brought people in, and add new listings regularly. Shops that stagnate — same listings, same photos, no updates — tend to lose ranking over time.

NeonSign can help you keep your listings optimized as you grow: generating keyword-rich titles and descriptions, suggesting photo improvements, and identifying which of your listings have room to rank higher. The goal is to spend more time making great products and less time guessing what the algorithm wants.
